Goods stock

These first two models of Lynton & Barnstaple goods wagons are of stock built by the Bristol C.&W. Co. in 1898.

Both models are available in four different colour / livery combinations:

  • L&B grey livery - available with four different numbers *
  • S.R. brown livery - available with four different numbers *
  • Plain grey, with no company lettering
  • Plain brown, with no company lettering

* Note that if you order more than one vehicle of a particular type, we will endeavour to supply different numbers.

Open goods wagon. These had a capacity of 4 tons and had a wooden body on a steel underframe. Originally fitted with top hung doors, these were soon changed to have side hinges. The floor planking was exposed beneath the sides when the latter were renewed. Later, tarpaulin rails were added, together with a brake lever on one side.
In L&B grey livery, S.R. brown livery, plain grey, or plain brown. Please specify when ordering. £22.00

Four-wheel goods van. These had a capacity of 4 tons, being built on the same underframe as the open wagons. They remained unmodified, except for a change in livery, throughout their life. In 1935 you could have acquired the real thing at auction for just £4; perhaps even better value than the model!
In L&B grey livery, S.R. brown livery, plain grey, or plain brown. Please specify when ordering. £27.00

Bogie goods brake van.
8 ton brake van No. 23 was built in 1909, in the L&B's own Pilton Yard, and was the only wooden-framed vehicle on the line. It was similar to the two original vans, though these did not have guard's duckets and started life with open verandahs, though these were later enclosed). It was used right to the very end of the railway, in the demolition train, and survived in a Devonshire field until it was rescued. By then it was the only surving piece of original rolling stock.
In L&B grey livery, S.R. brown livery, plain grey, or plain brown. Please specify when ordering. £76.00

Guard's van.
R.Y. Pickering & Co. Ltd provided two guard's vans (numbered 1 and 2) for the opening of the railway. Originally, these did not have sliding side doors, but this was very soon remedied to enhance the vans' usefulness, especially when running with passenger stock. It is in this form that one was recently rebuilt, having been all but destroyed by fire. The vans were later modified again; the open balcony was enclosed with sliding doors and the previous side doors removed. The model is based on the intermediated form, with open balcony and side doors. G.W. livery is not therefore appropriate, but a version of the model in 'data only' G.W. graphite grey will be available in 2009.
In W&L grey livery, or plain grey. Please specify when ordering.
    £58.00

Goods van.
These 4 ton goods vans (originally numbered from 3 to 6) were also part of the original order to Pickering & Co. Apart from an improvement in the braking arrangement, they remained unchanged except for their livery.
In W&L grey livery, G.W. graphite grey, or plain grey. Please specify when ordering.

Pickering & Co. provided six timber-framed bolster wagons (originally numbered from 49 to 54) shortly after the railway opened. The model is based on these. The GWR built four more (steel-framed) bolsters, but when the timber trade declined, all but two of the entire stock were converted to small 4-plank open wagons in 1946S.
